MEDIA ALERT:
ideastream launches week-long reporting series on the impact of community conditions on health in Northeast Ohio
All this week, Aug. 14-18, ideastream will share reports on WVIZ/PBS, 90.3 WCPN and online

Aug. 14, 2017 (Cleveland) – Experts estimate that 80 to 90 percent of health emerges from environmental and social circumstances, such as neighborhood safety, poverty, health care access, air pollution, housing and education. To demonstrate the impact of community conditions on health in Northeast Ohio in a concrete way, ideastream reporters have been targeting specific regions to examine the driving factors behind poor health. A series of data-driven reports will air all week on various programs on 90.3 WCPN and WVIZ/PBS, in addition to online versions of each report.

What: ZIP Code: The Hidden Vital Sign reporting series

When: Aug. 14–18, 2017

Where: Reports will air throughout the week on the following programs:

  • Morning Edition weekdays 5–9 a.m. on 90.3
  • The Sound of Ideas weekdays at 9 a.m. on 90.3
  • Here & Now featuring The Sound of Applause weekdays 12–2 p.m. on 90.3
  • All Things Considered weekdays 4–8 p.m. on 90.3
  • Ideas weekdays at 7:30 p.m. on WVIZ/PBS
  • Applause Friday, Aug. 18 at 8:30 p.m. on WVIZ/PBS

The reporting series will include one-on-one interviews, panel discussions with experts, radio and TV feature stories, and a Facebook Live Q&A. Some topics and neighborhood spotlights include:

  • The not-so-obvious effects of gardening on community health with a look at community gardens in Glenville and Detroit Shoreway.
  • The role nonprofit hospitals have in neighborhood improvement.
  • The effect of neighborhood-led yoga and mindfulness programs on regions affected by poverty-related stress.
  • A comparison of how hunger and obesity manifest in rural and urban neighborhoods, with a look at Richland County.
  • What’s behind the shortage of dental care providers in Huron County.

Northeast Ohio residents can watch and listen to this series on air and online at ideastream.org/zipcode. Content will also be posted, shared and live-streamed on social media.
